My reason for writing is not to revisit the good ol' days, but merely to make this point: leaving Russellville and Logan County to get what you need is still a choice, not a neccesity. The small businesses and chain stores that we have in our town still meet all our basic needs, but we have an advantage that I'll cover later that many don't think of. First, let's clarify that by saying you don't have to leave town, I'm not implying you should spend more time at WalMart. Far from it. You can accomplish this goal without even walking through their automatic doors. If you're one of the thousands of people in this county who work or visit Russellville every day, then you can find most everything you need in a couple of stops that are truly more convenient than any trip to the edge of town. The Piggly Wiggly store stocks an impressive variety of food for a relatively small building, but don't expect to find Ultra Jumbo size of much besides sugar, flour, beans, and rice. Also, the butcher services available at The Harvest provide an impressive selection of meats. It's time to break our forced mindset that the only things available to us in Logan County are Wal-Mart and fast food resturaunts. We all want our community to be better, but if we don't support what we have here, we'll never have more. Support small business when you can. Please, leave your comments about thinking local below. You have to be registered to do so. |
